Greetings Friends! February was a bustling month for the Visual & Performing Arts Department. All hands were on deck for Arts Week 2016, our very first All School Art Show, the Upper School play, Wonderland and Alice's Adventure's In It, and Impulse Open-mic. The students worked really hard to present these community events and were shining stars organizing and performing in spite of a quick blizzard. Make sure you take a slow stroll throughout the hallways and enjoy all of the beautiful work. There is at least one work of art from every Agnes Irwin student taking an art class, PreK through Twelve! Don't forget to "like" and "follow" our Visual and Performing Arts Department on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. and keep up with our creative students in action!

This year, our Arts Week schedule focused on the intersections between Art and Science. Our first speaker was Dr. Bahman Kalantari from Rutgers University. He was a wonderful speaker, telling a charming story about about how he "accidentally" became an artist while studying Math. Dr, Kalantari introduced the students to the art of Polynomiography, where images are derived from mathematical functions. Dr. Kalantari graciously spent the rest of the day providing a more in-depth discussion with our Math students. for more info about Polynomiography go here!

Music Therapist, Adenike Webb did a workshop with our students, illustrating the therapeutic power of music. Adenike provides group and individual music therapy interventions to children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders in an in-patient setting. Ms. Webb works with the Drueding Center, Holy Redeemer Health System’s transitional housing program in Olde Kensington, Philadelphia, where she led "The Singing Cats." The musicians, ages five - eleven, are members of the Center’s after-school program. They participated in a 14-week music therapy program called Hear Our Voices, where they wrote and recorded songs describing things that are important to them.
Arts Board member Zahra Ortiz reported on Doctor Jonathan Wallis's lecture on last day of Art’s Week.
"Dr. Jonathan Wallis is associate professor of art history and curatorial studies and the Penny and Bob Fox Distinguished Professor at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, PA. This year was Dr. Wallis's fourth Arts Week visit to AIS and we look forward to it each year!!! This visit, Dr. Wallace spoke about Surrealism. He mentioned that when the infamous artist Salvador Dali watched a movie, he regarded the commercials as part of the movie. Dali did not view the commercials as separate from the movie, and would analyze and interpret the the whole broadcast. Inspired by Dali’s idea, Dr. Wallace introduced us to a surrealist poetry writing activity. We each created a sentence, constructed in three parts from three different students. The sentence contained an opening of three words, followed by an adjective, and then concluded with another word or two.
This is the poem our group created:

He slithered delightful, cowered in fear.
The fire at fluffy left the cafeteria.
The blue-eyed boy, blurry, was exciting.
A sunflower dashing for eternity.
One silver day, hungry, fell in love.
I woke up and green ate the pizza.
Due to the snow day, we are hoping to reschedule two of our Arts Week speakers.
Stay tuned to hear from Dr. Iman K. Martin and artist Rebecca Kamen!

GRADE 5: Junk ReThunk sculptures
5th grade artists reimagined a new life for our ordinary unwanted junk. Students transformed paper, cardboard, plastic containers, water and juice bottles, berry baskets, and more. Recycling and reconfiguring old into new, materials creatively evolved into a world of animals, aliens and mythical creatures.
Starting : Picasso Portraits.
The portraits are an abstract observation of human expression. Like Picasso, 5th grade artists illustrate the expressive elements and inner feelings of people through color and line. At the same time they examine how people moved and changed throughout time and space, hence creating portraits that show both front and profile simultaneously.
